IN JAMIE YANAK’S PERSPECTIVE
There is a scene in Out Of Place that takes place in Jamie Yanak’s dark room.   Jamie, Camel cigarette dangling from his mouth, is shown printing  a photograph of Vince Labbe surfing.  It is one of my favorite moments in the film.  Jamie’s eloquent voice over captures so many feelings I have about the whole lake surfing experience.  Jamie says, and I am paraphrasing here, that the surfers are interesting in their own right, beyond the fact that they surf in a lake.  He says they are a band of misfits and outsiders, like himself.  That maybe that is why he is drawn to them.Jamie was introduced to the Cleveland surf scene while on a photo assignment.  I think it might have been for the Associated Press.  After the assignment ended he continued shooting the surfers on his own time.  The next thing he knew he had an amazing collection of Lake Erie surf photographs, and  Furthermore, he ended up learning to surf and became a beloved member of the close-knit crew.   As he says in the film: now they are his best friends.Jamie has been shooting a lot of pictures lately and posting many of them on his blogs and Flickr account.  I have been enjoying his personal blog,  Silver Halide Dreams.  It features great writing and photographs to match.  A few months ago Jamie began publishing an awesome Cleveland surf blog, The Sewer Pipe, named after the famous Edgewater Beach break that sits precariously close to a sewage run-off pipe.  The banner image on the site features one of my all time favorite lake surfing photographs and is worth a visit alone.   The blog is often hilarious and perfectly captures Jamie’s north eastern Ohio perspective (Yanak is a Parma boy born and raised!).Enjoy these sites!http://www.flickr.com/photos/jamieyanak/http://thesewerpipe.blogspot.com/http://jamiegottagun.blogspot.com/2010/11/hotshot-eastbound.htmlAnd say hi to Jamie for me if you see him on the beach with his Nikon.-Kurt View high resolution

Surfing the Waves of Lake Erie

This is a great radio piece on the kooks from Out Of Place that was originally broadcast on WKSU.  I love this.

The Barn Owls

The Barn Owls are from Columbus, Ohio. They are brothers Robby Staebler on drums/good vibrations and Jason Staebler on guitar, bass, and loops. They wrote the majority of the film’s score. I honestly don’t know what Out Of Place would be like without the Barn Owl’s. It would definitely be different and I am pretty sure not nearly as good. We owe them big time. Robby and Jason are two of the best people around. They exude good energy and their presence is always appreciated.
I was lucky enough to share a house on the north side of Ohio State campus with Robby while editing Out Of Place. It was a great time. The Barn Owl’s used to have practice every week and Jason often slept over. I remember once when Jason and Robby had a sleep over with both of them in sleeping bags on the floor laying side by side. They kept each other up for hours making faces and strange noises. Making each other laugh in a way only brothers can. Their music is the same way. In sync and connected. The music can move in seemingly random directions, but always together.

Will post a Barn Owl’s MP3 shortly, along with other soundtrack gems.

Photo of Robby is by Jason (they both take awesome pictures: www.robbystaebler.com and http://www.flickr.com/photos/jimbones/)

The 2nd Annual New York Surf Film Festival

Out Of Place has been invited to be a part of the New York Surf Film Festival. This is a huge honor for us. The festival is put together by a group of great surfers in New York. Surfers that love the water and love movies. It is a dream come true to be able to screen our movie on the BIG SCREEN at the Tribeca Cinemas.

If you want to come to New York for the festival and some waves let us know.  We can help you find a way to the city and a place to crash. There will be some room on my floor and we got a couch.
